INSTALLATION PROJECT
The Wall: Life in Palestine
Location: Gallery. Installation. Open Space in Boston Cambridge.
Date: As soon as a team is in place. Summer 2010
Need:
I am looking for a group of volunteers, artists, in the Boston Cambridge area who can assist with the creation of "The Wall: Life In Palestine."
Concept:
Create a 24 foot (8 Meters) high wall, the "Separation Wall in Palestine." The wall extends the width of a gallery or a public space. On one side of the wall is the graffiti on the Wall that snakes through Palestine. The other side is photos and pictures of people in Palestine. We will use videos and photographs from Palestinians, and Palestinian students on the opposite side of the wall.
In front of the wall barbed wire, and garbage strewn space between the wall and the barbed wire. Before you go into the gallery, there are "Israeli soldiers" who check your paperwork.
Also, there is a cattle chute that is approximately the same length as the check point crossing from Ramallah to Jerusalem. Once you are in the gallery you need to pass through the chute. That chute is controlled by Israeli soldiers.
Construction
Construct this of 5"8th inch plywood on a frame of 2 x 4". 4 feet wide sections. 24 feet high. App. 45 feet in length. App 1 to 2 feet wide. Anchored against a fix wall on either end. Painted battleship grey. Reproduce the graffiti that one finds on the separation wall. On the opposite side will be an LCD projector with videos and photographs, and music of life in Palestine. Perhaps even a live dance.
2nd Choice
Best Choice, foam core panels, painted grey, sprayed with concrete.
Steps
- First step - Identifying a group of volunteers and then a gallery or public space to create this.
- Second - The construction of this wall
- Third Phase - The construction of the "cattle chute."
Concept:
By placing this 24 foot high wall across the length of the gallery it will give Americans, Europeans and others a small sense of what it is like to be faced with this Wall of Separation in your community. This wall which snakes through Palestine, arbitrarily place on Palestinian lands, and imprisons both Palestinians and Israelis. Like the ghetto walls that imprisoned Jews in Europe.

I am putting this forward to create this project in Cambridge/ Boston area. If you know of people who would be interested in this, please forward this webpage. The project details are listed on the left side. As part of this process, we hope to engender a conversation about life in Palestine, the wall, its impact on Palestinians and Israelis. The wall is an overwhelming reality when you see it: Ugly & Brutal. Perhaps, this is also a homeopathic cure, like cures like. Or, to help people feel on a visceral level what this 8 meter high wall feels and looks like. Also, the experience in being in the "Cattle chute," the metal cages you have to go through to transit across border areas.
