Bio
(The Not so reluctant Virgin: Though I am reluctant to write a bio sheet, my promo manager insists, and since I was never shy, why not satisfy him. To me, it is always about the Work, it is NOT about the artist. The artist in a way is the side show, but the real work is what is the artist producing? In an age that values bullshit over substance, it is difficult to keep that perspective; especially, when one is a poet. In order to keep Justin happy so he can finish the webpage, here I go.)
At my essence I live for the creative process and my life is fueled by curiosity. My creativity is best expressed in my art, poetry, performance, visual arts, plays, children’s stories, singer/ song writer, and my large multimedia installation projects.
This past year I performed GOD SEX POLITICS in Malaysia; jammed with dozens of jazz bands; wrote and produced a new musical The Beatnik Café; finished a new book of poems Blue Heron Pond: Love Song for the Planet; created a new large installation project Laundry List of Wishes; developed a new line of art poetry www.vermontartpoetry.com ; almost completed a new CD Amerika Uber Alles; produced half a dozen new multimedia works, many new songs and poems, and my annual journal is now at the year’s end clocking in at 800 pages. Best of all, I’m not even manic!
I was born in the Bronx born and have spent my life traveling, both physically and astrally (some of my best gigs are on the planet Andar). As a kid I lived in Seville Spain with early memories of Morocco and Tangiers. My life has been shaped by traveling and I’ve visited over 75 countries around the world, probably getting close to a 100 by now. In many places I’ve played and performed from intimate shows to coffee houses, galleries, theaters, and jazz clubs. As you will note on my rap sheet I’ve played in Morocco, New Zealand, Ephesus in Turkey, Malaysia, Ireland, Denmark, Andar, Holland, England, Ireland, through out the US and many places that I’ve forgotten. My favorite gigs were the ones I don’t remember-- Ah, the vicissitudes of age. In my song, Free… Like Gypsies of Old Let’s Wander This Globe … this is the essence of my life: playing songs, telling stories, and traveling around the world.
I’m a natural born storyteller. (My wife will attest to that.) During shows, whether it’s because I’m senile or smoked too much pot as a youngster, the shows are largely improvised. I love the playful presence on stage, where I can take words or ideas from an audience and create a story. In Amsterdam at the Winston, to a crowd of stoners, I took greasy fried chicken, flying pigs, quantum physics and true love as beautiful story of unrequited love.
My career list to support this seedy occupation of poet has included: – handyman, nurse, nurse practitioner, homeopathic physician, sailor, landlord, factory worker, peace corps volunteer, third world community development worker, etc. I hold undergraduate degrees in literature, science, and nursing; graduate degrees in International Affairs and a doctorate in homeopathy. Surely, this kind of eclectic four-car accident of a non-career leaves me totally unsuited for anything but being a poet.
I write about twenty hours a week of journals, songs, poems, children’s stories, and articles and still find time for a few other things. One might say, the near schizophrenic dancing on the edge of a dozen different realities at the same time. Didn’t Emma Goldman say, “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution.”
This brings us around to performance art… my life work as a peace activist, and creative soul all comes to play on the stage in front of an audience. From the many different lives I’ve lived, I can bring that schizophrenic/visionary/ mystic madness to the stage. As a poet, we are merely mirrors for society, and in this schizophrenic society I hold up that mirror. We are I.
By entering into the realm of GOD SEX POLITICS: Namaya Live! You are entering my world, the living room of my enchantment, there will be stories of all the rooms of my life, traveling the globe, jazz poetry from clubs around the world, fables conjured while I was touring on the planet Andar, blues from my forays into the delta, and even songs in French and Spanish. In this artist’s palette drawn from my journey around the globe and inside the curious recess of my imagination. |
